Post #95: Native Foods- Caribbean Queen Burger
I went to the ever-spacious Native Foods in Wicker Park on a cold January evening. I ordered one of the "new for 2012 items" on the menu- the Caribbean Queen Burger: "shaved slices of our island-style Native Original Seitan piled high with sliced avocado, lettuce, carrots, onion, mayo and a fresh mango-pepper salsa."
I would first like to say that the best part of this burger was the avocado. Avocado has a way of making any entrée tasting somewhat decent. For the record, the island-style Native Original Seitan is nothing special or different from the other thin-sliced seitan offerings. The avocado's gastronomic nemesis was undoubtedly the mango-pepper salsa. I was unable to enjoy the taste of the mangos and peppers. The entire salsa was drowned in some kind of salad dressing. It was unpleasant to say the least. This burger was mediocre, nothing more or less.
Rating: 1.5 Magpies
There seems to be something about Milwaukee Avenue-based restaurants and the inability to make a good mango salsa. I'd like to challenge the folks at the Dr. Martens store up the street from Native Foods to make one. Surely they can't do any worse than the former occupants of their current space or Native Foods for that matter.
